Prove it existed.

Timestamping

A timestamp is one of the simplest and least expensive records you can create. It documents that a file existed in exactly this form at a given moment, useful long before a dispute, and often helpful once there is one.

Copyright, know-how, designs in progress, draft specifications, source code, contract versions: much of what matters to a business is never entered in any register. If ownership or priority is questioned later, the argument turns on what you can prove about the file and the date. A cryptographic timestamp helps address that question without disclosing the document itself.

Your document never leaves your device. Your browser derives a fingerprint from it (a short string that cannot be reversed back into the file), and only that fingerprint is sealed into the Bitcoin blockchain. Anyone can later check a copy of the document against the fingerprint, but nobody can reconstruct the content from it.

The result is a certificate you keep alongside the file and can produce in negotiations, in an ownership dispute, or before a court, where its weight is assessed case by case. It does not replace registration where registration exists (a trademark or a patent still has to be filed), but for everything that lives outside a register, it gives your account of the timeline something concrete to rest on.

How it works

  1. Choose your document

It stays on your device. The file itself is never uploaded.

  2. A fingerprint is computed

Your browser derives a unique cryptographic fingerprint from the file.

  3. The fingerprint is timestamped

Only that fingerprint is sent, and sealed into the Bitcoin blockchain.

  4. You receive a certificate

Download the proof and store it with the document it belongs to.

How the tool works

  1. Choose up to 10 files.
  2. Your browser computes a SHA-256 fingerprint of each one: the files themselves never leave your device.
  3. Enter an e-mail address, pick a certificate language and pay by card.
  4. Each fingerprint is anchored in the Bitcoin blockchain and you receive one certificate per document.

The interactive tool needs JavaScript. If it has not loaded, enable JavaScript and reload the page, or send us the documents and we will timestamp them for you.

One price per submission, set by how many documents you send: each document gets its own certificate and proof file.

Timestamping records that a file existed at a point in time. It does not by itself establish who created the work or what rights attach to it: we advise on that separately.

Common questions

Timestamping - common questions

What exactly does a timestamp prove?

That a file existed in exactly that form at a given moment. It documents existence and integrity, not authorship. It is powerful evidence that a document has not been altered since the date it was sealed, and it does not by itself establish who created it, which is why we usually pair it with the ownership documentation that does.

Is my document uploaded anywhere?

No. The file never leaves your device. Your browser computes a cryptographic fingerprint (a short string that cannot be reversed back into the file), and only that fingerprint is sent and sealed into the Bitcoin blockchain. Nobody, including us, can reconstruct the content from it.

Will a court accept it?

A timestamp can be verified independently by anyone, without relying on us. It is not a legally prescribed form of proof, however: what weight it carries is for a court to assess freely in each individual case. It is evidence, and good evidence, not a certificate of title.

When is a timestamp the right tool?

For everything that matters to your business and is not in any register: source code, design work in progress, draft specifications, know-how, contract versions, research data, creative work. Where a register exists (trademarks, patents, designs), the registration is the stronger right and a timestamp does not replace it.

How long does it take?

Minutes. You select the file, the fingerprint is computed in your browser, and the certificate is issued and sent to you by e-mail. Pricing is on the page above: CHF 5 for one document, CHF 19 for up to five, CHF 29 for up to ten.
